Rudy Claassen, President of SWD Cricket, said that cricket in the region has grown because of the leadership and commitment of great men. Claassen made mention of honourary president Simon Swigelaar, Raymond Avontuur as well as Debbie Conradie who attended the evening.
"They are a few of the ones that have contributed in the past. Tonight is also a tribute to them and testimony to the great work that they performed," Claassen said.
Building of the complex started in April 2011 and the initial phase was funded by the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) to the amount of R2,7-million. Phase one consisted of the construction of a club house, president suite and offices.
Phase two saw construction of dressing rooms commence in May 2012. Completion of the complex was made possible when the Sports Trust and Cricket South Africa funded an amount of R300 000 towards phase two.
"The construction of the new facilities is a symbol of growth in an exciting period in the history of SWD Cricket," said Claassen.
He expressed the wish that the new facility should contribute towards the objective of SWD Cricket to become a full affiliate of Cricket South Africa. "The new facility will allow SWD Cricket to host high profile matches and enhance the total image of cricket in the region," said Claassen.
