GEORGE/OUDTSHOORN NEWS - Four suspects are expected to appear in court following separate incidents involving the theft of a motorcycle in George and the possession of suspected stolen property linked to a shoplifting case in Oudtshoorn.
These arrests follow a joint effort between the South African Police Service (SAPS), neighbourhood watch groups, private security companies and members of the public.
In the first incident, a 40-year-old man was arrested in connection with the theft of a motorcycle that had been reported stolen in Dassie Street, Denneoord, George, on 28 July.
According to the police, preliminary investigations and video footage indicate that the suspect had allegedly stolen the motorcycle and taken it to a residence in Wellington Street, where it was reportedly repainted.
Acting on information, the police and community members traced the suspect to a house in Blanco, where he attempted to evade arrest by hiding on the roof. He was apprehended and the motorcycle was recovered nearby. The officers found that the ignition lock had been tampered with.
The suspect has been charged with the theft of a motor vehicle and is expected to appear in the George Magistrate’s Court on 31 July.

In a separate incident, members of the Oudtshoorn Police arrested a man in the town’s CBD at about 15:40 on 29 July after discovering seven bottles of champagne worth R6 509.65 in his possession.
The police said the suspect was unable to explain how he had obtained these bottles, and he was subsequently arrested for the possession of suspected stolen property.
Further investigations linked the discovery to a shoplifting incident at a retail store in Oudtshoorn earlier that day.
The police, assisted by private security officers, later identified the vehicle used by the suspect as a black Hyundai sedan. The vehicle’s details were circulated to neighbouring police stations, neighbourhood watch organisations and security companies.
Later that evening, members of the George Crime Prevention Unit spotted a vehicle matching the description being driven along Courtney Street in George. They stopped the vehicle and found additional items believed to have been stolen, such as chocolates and clothing with the price tags still attached.
A 46-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman were arrested on charges of shoplifting and the possession of suspected stolen property. They are expected to appear in the George Magistrate’s Court once they have been formally charged.
The Garden Route’s district police commissioner, Major General Phumzile Cetyana, praised the combined efforts of the police, private security companies, neighbourhood watch groups and community members. “This collaboration demonstrates our commitment to fight crime collectively to make a significant impact on crime prevention and to bring perpetrators to book,” she said.
