PRINCE ALBERT NEWS - Leeu-Gamka police have opened a culpable homicide docket after 21 victims succumbed following an accident on the N1 at Leeu-Gamka at 23:30 on Sunday 13 September.
The department of mobility said emergency, medical, traffic and forensic teams are still at the scene.
To allow rescue operations, forensic investigations and the safe clearance of the crash site, the N1 between Laingsburg and Beaufort West remains closed in both directions.
Motorists are strongly advised to avoid this stretch of road and use alternative routes where possible.
The only available alternative route is via Prince Albert Road Station, along the R407 towards the N12, and then continuing on the N12 towards Beaufort West. This alternative route is about 200km.
Mobility minister visits site
Western Cape Minister of Mobility Isaac Sileku is visiting the crash site this morning to assess the situation and receive an update from traffic officials and emergency medical personnel.
“This is a devastating loss of life. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives in this tragic collision. Our traffic and emergency response teams are working tirelessly at the scene under challenging conditions. Because of the seriousness of the crash, the road will remain closed for some time,” said Sileku.
Police confirmation
The Southern Cape Police’s spokesperson, Warrant Officer Chris Spies, confirmed that the accident is being investigated.
“According to information available at this stage, emergency personnel were summoned to a scene after three vehicles collided. Upon arrival police found two Toyota minibus taxis that collided head on and a Suzuki station wagon that collided with one of the taxis. A total of 21 occupants sustained multiple injuries and were declared deceased. Several other occupants were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.”
According to Spies the cause of the accident is to be established and forms part of the ongoing police investigation.
Devastating loss
Western Cape Minister of Health and Wellness Mireille Wenger said the focus is also on those who have been injured and the teams caring for them.
“We are devastated by the loss of multiple lives following this serious collision on the N1. Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones who have lost someone in this tragedy. No words can ease the pain of such a sudden and devastating loss, and we hold them in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” she said.
“Several other passengers have also sustained serious injuries, and we wish them strength as they receive the care they need. I also want to express my sincere gratitude to our emergency medical services personnel, healthcare workers and all first responders who have worked through the night to respond to this tragedy and care for those affected.”
Advice for motorists
Avoid the N1 between Laingsburg and Beaufort West and use alternative routes where possible.
Heavy motor vehicles and long-distance operators are requested to proceed to the nearest truck stop or town and park until the road is declared safe and reopened.
Do not attempt to bypass roadblocks or road closures. Motorists must follow the instructions of traffic officials at the scene.
Motorists already in the queue are urged to exercise patience, keep emergency lanes clear and remain in their vehicles where it is safe to do so.
