BUSINESS NEWS - The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has urged employers who have not yet submitted their 2026 Employer Interim Reconciliation Declaration (EMP501) to do so before the deadline on Saturday, 31 October.
The interim reconciliation covers the six-month period from 1 March to 31 August and requires employers to reconcile payroll information, including Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE), Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) contributions and Skills Development Levy (SDL) amounts.
Employers must also ensure that employee details and IRP5/IT3(a) certificates are accurate and complete.
With the deadline approaching, SARS has warned employers against leaving submissions until the last minute, as validation errors, rejected submissions or discrepancies could delay the process.
Employers urged to verify submissions
SARS has reminded employers that submitting an EMP501 does not necessarily mean the reconciliation has been completed successfully.
After submitting their declarations, employers should check their submission status and PAYE Dashboard to confirm that the reconciliation has been processed.
The revenue service has emphasised the importance of accurate employer declarations in maintaining the integrity of South Africa’s tax system and supporting the country’s public finances.
The deadline comes amid renewed focus on fiscal sustainability following the 2026 Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS).
SARS said it continues to modernise tax administration to make compliance easier, while expecting employers to fulfil their tax obligations.
Changes to interim filing process
The 2026 Employer Interim Filing Season includes enhancements to the EMP201 and EMP501 processes, the introduction of new source codes, revised validation rules and improvements to the e@syFile™ Employer software.
SARS has warned that late or inaccurate submissions may result in penalties and interest.
Its compliance approach aims to encourage voluntary compliance while identifying non-compliance and ensuring that failure to meet tax obligations carries consequences.
The revenue service has thanked employers who have already submitted their declarations and urged those with outstanding EMP501 submissions to act before the deadline.
