OUDTSHOORN NEWS - The two suspects who were arrested last week for the stoning of 18-year-old Mlungisi Stwayi in April appeared in court on Wednesday morning.
The case was postponed for a formal bail application until 20 August.
Noxolo Stwayi, Mlungisi's mother said she is happy about the arrests.
"I worked with Leon Campher and we handed in a petition to ask the judge not to grant bail."
According to Sergeant Chris Spies, spokesperson for the police in the Southern Cape, Oudtshoorn detectives made a breakthrough in the murder after a thorough investigation.
The investigation led to the arrest of two suspects aged 17 and 18, both from Bongolethu in Oudtshoorn. The suspects remain in custody and the investigation continues.
An eyewitness said he and friends were standing near the dive at Black Joint when they heard a noise.
Many young people or children kept throwing stones at the boy and we tried to stop them. We could see between the dust and stones that he was already very hurt. Most of the children are still in school.
According to him, Mlungisi got a chance to flee and went home. They got the news the next day that the boy had passed away.
Stwayi's mother, Noxolo Stwayi, told Oudtshoorn Courant, shortly after the death of her son, that he was the eldest of three children.
According to her, Mlungisi arrived home at around 21:00 that night and his whole face was covered in blood.
"You could see he had a nasty blow to his face. We called the ambulance and the paramedics said he just needed bandages and they drove off again. We went to bed a little while later. I woke up later to a sound like snoring I heard from his room, but not how he usually sounds. We called the ambulance, but he was declared dead at the hospital."
