INTERNATIONAL NEWS - The former England and Manchester United captain admitted the offence at a hearing held at Stockport Magistrates’ Court in England, on Monday, 18 September.
He was arrested earlier this month when police officers stopped a Volkswagen Beetle vehicle belonging to a woman named Laura Simpson in Wilmslow, Cheshire. He was charged with driving while over the prescribed legal alcohol limit.
Prosecutors told the court that officers had stopped the vehicle as it had a faulty tail light, and that Rooney was found to be almost three times over the legal alcohol driving limit.
According to the Manchester Evening News, during the hearing Rooney’s lawyer said his client, “wishes to express remorse” over the incident, which was a “terrible mistake and error of judgement”.
District Judge John Temperley sentenced the sportsman to a two-year driving ban, 100 hours unpaid community work, and fined him $115 (R1 500) costs and a $115 victim surcharge.
