The airline confirmed the plane lost contact with aviation authorities at 2:45 a.m. local time when it was flying at 37,000 feet. The Airbus A320 vanished 10 miles after it entered Egyptian airspace, the airline said.
Egypt's Civil Aviation Authority said flight MS804 may have crashed, according to the Associated Press, although that has not been confirmed and no wreckage has been located. Local Egyptian media also reported the plane may have crashed.
Among the 56 passengers were two babies and a child. EgyptAir listed the nationalities of the passengers as: 30 Egyptians, 15 French, two Iraqis and one each from Sudan, Chad, Portugal, Algeria, Canada, Great Britain, Belgium, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
