GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Seven teachers from the Eden and Central Karoo education district will compete at provincial level after receiving national teaching awards at the local cluster award ceremonies. The clusters are Metropole North and East, Metropole South and Central, Cape Winelands, Eden and Central Karoo, West Coast and Overberg.
In each cluster, the contestants were required to do presentations during their interviews with an experienced and knowledgeable panel.
The winners are:
- Nomsa Charlie of Thembalethu Primary (Excellence in Primary School Teaching)
- Brandon Claassen of Môrester Secondary in Oudtshoorn (Excellence in Secondary School Teaching)
- Annemi Barnard of Vorentoe Primary in Great Brak River (Excellence in Grade R Teaching)
- Prosper Nopondwana of Thembalethu High (Excellence in Teaching Natural Sciences)
- Mthunzi Nqwane of Thembalethu Primary (Excellence in Technology-enhanced Teaching and Learning)
- John van Wyk Dames of Milkwood Primary in Mossel Bay (Excellence in Primary School Leadership)
- Edna Loxton of Hillcrest Secondary in Mossel Bay (Lifetime Achievement Award).
The department is delighted with the increase in nominations for 2019. "In 2018 we received 205 nominations and this has increased in 2019 to 247."
Prizes
The NTA's objective is to celebrate the extraordinary efforts of our excellent teachers and create a platform to publicly show the appreciation for the hard and sterling work that teachers do, sometimes under very difficult circumstances. The first prize received at cluster level was a R4 000 ICT voucher while runners-up received a R2 000 ICT voucher each.
Capitec Foundation sponsored cash vouchers to the winners of the following categories: Excellence in Primary School Leadership and Secondary School Leadership (R6 000 each), Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (GET) (R6 000 each) and Excellence in Technology-enhanced Teaching and Learning (R3 000 each).
The winners at provincial level will each receive cash vouchers from Capitec Foundation, ICT vouchers and laptops from the Western Cape Education Department (WCED).
The 49 NTA cluster winners across the six clusters will now compete for the provincial honours of representing the WCED at the national round of the NTA. The provincial adjudication process will start on Tuesday 1 October and will be completed on 11 October.
Thereafter the provincial minister will announce the provincial winners at the provincial awards ceremony in the form of a banquet on 8 November.

The WCED is proud of its teachers who participated in the 20th edition of the NTA and wishes to congratulate all teachers who were nominated and who were ultimately rewarded with the accolades of best teacher in their respective category of entry and cluster.
