OUDTSHOORN NEWS - Ntobeko Mangqwengqwe, senior communications officer of Oudtshoorn Municipality, has accepted a position with George Municipality. He will start his new position as a senior communications and intergovernmental relations officer on 3 January 2022.
He has been a stalwart of the communications department in Oudtshoorn Municipality since December 2008.
Born in Klipplaat in the Eastern Cape, Ntobeko came to Oudtshoorn in 1993 as a Grade 9 learner at Fezekile High School and went to Imizamo Yethu High School in George where he completed matric in 1996. He obtained a diploma in journalism in Cape Town and returned to Oudtshoorn in 2000 where he worked as a freelance journalist for, amongst others, Oudtshoorn Courant.
He joined SAPS where he served as a court orderly, a clerk and a personnel officer before being appointed as spokesperson of SAPS in George where he worked alongside Capt. Malcolm Pojie from 2006 till 2008.
When he joined Oudtshoorn Municipality in 2008 he was the first designated communications officer in the history of Oudtshoorn and was promoted to senior media and communications officer in 2014.
When asked about highlights of his career over the past 13 years he said: "What was rewarding about my job was to see people being helped and getting answers to their questions and enquiries. I believe that information is power, an informed resident in this instance is a happy person. There are so many positives that I struggle to think about any negativity, however, there were times of frustration when political instability in Oudtshoorn was rife and to some extent to the detriment of service delivery. This has not deterred me because throughout my life God has been the source of my strength."
Ntobeko is a keen student and has acquired several qualifications and is currently doing honours in Integrated Organisational Communications through Unisa. He has also been involved on many levels in the community in his private capacity.
Having recently been married he says he will commute between Oudtshoorn and George for a period and then relocate to George. "I see the people of Oudtshoorn as a family and I enjoyed every moment here. I treasure every relationship I managed to build with journalists, editors, stakeholders and the community."
The team at Oudtshoorn Courant wishes him all the best. Hamba kakuhle Mqithi!
