Meiringspoort remains closed as repair work continues after floods

DE RUST NEWS - The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure has emphasised that Meiringspoort remains closed to the public and warned road users not to attempt to bypass the closure.

The department said it has learnt with concern of rumours circulating that the poort can be accessed by signing in at the checkpoint or security boom under false pretences.

Meiringspoort is an active construction site and remains fully closed to all road users. This includes pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, light motor vehicles and heavy motor vehicles.

According to the department, access is strictly limited to residents within the affected area who need to travel to and from their homes.

The closure follows extensive damage caused by the May and June floods, which severely affected the road and infrastructure through the poort.

Repair work is expected to be a lengthy process. The department previously indicated that the permanent repair works could take up to two years.

In the meantime, work on a temporary solution is continuing and the hope is to have one lane open by December. This remains a future target and does not mean the poort is currently accessible.

The department urges road users not to rely on rumours or attempt to circumvent the safety protocols at the checkpoint.
