BEAUFORT WEST NEWS - The police seized drugs estimated to be worth R140 000 during a roadblock near Beaufort West in the Central Karoo on Sunday 18 October, leading to the arrest of a man and a woman.
According to Warrant Officer Chris Spies, police spokesperson for the Southern Cape, the suspects, aged 34 and 24, appeared in the Beaufort West Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 20 October.
Spies said some members of the Central Karoo District Crime Combatting Team and K9 unit were conducting a roadblock at the Rooidam Padstal on the R61 near the Aberdeen road at about 21:30 on Sunday 18 October when they noticed a vehicle associated with a known high-profile suspect approaching.
They stopped the vehicle and searched its occupants. Two sling bags containing some cash were found, while a search of the driver uncovered tik. A subsequent search of the passenger revealed a small quantity of Mandrax.
The police confiscated 400g of tik and the Mandrax tablets.
Spies said the driver allegedly offered the arresting officers some cash in exchange for his release.
Both accused remain in custody.
They face charges of dealing in drugs, while the man faces an additional charge of attempted bribery. The matter was postponed to 27 October for a formal bail application.
The police operations form part of ongoing efforts to combat the distribution of illegal drugs in communities, particularly ahead of the festive season.
