Now an annual event, the First Lady’s Half Marathon aims to raise money for the Beyond Zero Campaign which is the First Lady’s initiative to deliver mobile health clinics in all 47 counties in Kenya.
Kenyatta undertook a 6.5km run accompanied by members of her training team and the local media.
Fielding questions from the media after the run, Kenyatta said the Beyond Zero Campaign would continue to deliver mobile clinics, especially in the far flung corners of Kenya like in the pastoralist communities.
Funds raised during the forthcoming First Lady’s Half Marathon are aimed at purchasing 11 mobile clinics and refurbishing hospital wards across the country.
So far the campaign has distributed 36 fully kitted mobile clinics to an equal number of counties around the country.
Kenyatta reiterated what she has said in the past that “the ultimate goal of the campaign is to build a state of the art hospital for women and children.”
She said that although she had not been able to train as well as in previous years due to a busy schedule, she assured her supporters and sponsors that she would be at Nyayo Stadium on March 6 to both flag off the Half Marathon and to run with those registered for the race, but did not specify which race she will run.
Organisers of this year’s Half Marathon target to bring together over 70,000 participants, more than double last year’s runners.
This fourth edition of the run will include special features, including a wheelchair race and 2km, 5km,&and 10 km races.
The winner of the 21 km race for both men and women will take home Sh750, 000 as prize money while the runners-up will walk away with Sh500, 000.
