GARDEN ROUTE DISTRICT NEWS - How does one do a baking competition when all contestants and judges are under lockdown? Easy – you go the tech way.
This is what the organisers of the annual Cake Off Garden Route decided to do to keep the welfare drive going during this time when help to the needy is especially important.
Initiator of the Cake Off, Trudi Stander, says they didn’t dream of cancelling the Cake Off. The competition in George will take place tomorrow, 23 April, and in Mossel Bay and Hartenbos on 24 April. Oudtshoorn’s bake-off takes place today, 22 April.
The finished products will be auctioned off and much of the proceeds will go to the coronavirus feeding projects in the respective towns.
The rest will be divided between the contestants and the cost of advertising and running the competition.
High Tea
The theme of this year’s Cake Off is High Tea during #lockdown. Contestants must send in photos and a short video of them baking and decorating their cakes on the day before the competition. Each baker must produce a cake, 12 doughnuts and 12 meringues to the theme.
Judging will be different too – the focus will be on how well the theme is maintained, techniques used and the appearance of the final product.
The judges this year are the well-known South African singer Tobi Jooste, Otto, Denise Lloyd, Ian Perryman, Cecilia van der Heyde and Ronelle Stopforth.
The three towns’ winners will compete in the final in the first week of May to determine the Garden Route’s best baker.
The time is now
Georgians who still want to take part have to act as soon as they read this, as the baking and taking of the video and photos has to take place today.
