GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - National Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga during an inspection of the Thembalethu Bridge project on Thursday 18 April expressed her satisfaction at the progress made so far.
The bridge is being widened at a cost of R160 million to create two lanes in each direction, with additional turning lanes.
There will also be a lane for pedestrians and cyclists and it will be wheelchair accessible.
Chikunga said the project is an example of the high calibre of South Africa's engineering and she was impressed and satisfied with the progress.
Briefing the minister on the progress, project manager Petronella Theron said in two months' time road users will have access to the full width of the bridge, although more work will still have to be done.
Chikunga is in the Garden Route on an inspection tour of several projects along the N2 that are being undertaken by the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (Sanral).
Her visit includes an oversight of the R700 million upgrade of the N2 through Wilderness between Kraaibosch and Touw River and the construction site of a roundabout on the N2 Beacon Way intersection in Plettenberg Bay, a project costing about R100 million.
Sanral is also busy with a resealing project of R230 million on the N2 between Dekriet and Mossel Bay.
The upgrade of the N2 between Touw River and Die Vleie is currently out on tender.
