NATIONAL NEWS - Mere hours after the heavy rains stopped on Tuesday, the Clean Surf Project (CSP) team and active beach-goers were already tackling the Winklespruit stretch of beach, in an effort to rid it of the frightening mass of litter washed down from inland, reports South Coast Sun.
A massive 940kg of litter was removed from the 500m stretch.
“This was only a 500m stretch of beach, but the whole coastline is extremely affected by pollution after these rains,” said CSP founder, Denzil van der Westhuizen.
“We urged the community to go down whenever they can, to whatever stretch of beach they can, and try pick up some rubbish. Filled rubbish bags can be left quite a distance up from the high water mark, as the tide is still very high after the rains.”
A cleanup is set to take place on Thursday morning from 8.30am at Amanzimtoti Main Beach, and another on Saturday at Pipeline Beach from 9am. For both clean-ups, those taking part are to bring gloves, refreshments, and closed shoes. Bags will be supplied.
