OUDTSHOORN NEWS - Lunchbox Theatre has just concluded an impactful tour along the R62, bringing its beloved production, A Dog’s Life, to schools across the region.
Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, 2 293 young learners in Ladismith, Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn experienced this thought-provoking story, designed to foster compassion and responsibility toward animals.
Lunchbox Theatre is a dynamic non-profit organisation dedicated to educating, inspiring and empowering young audiences through the power of live performance.
Using theatre as a tool for social change, the organization delivers engaging productions that address critical social and environmental issues, leaving a lasting impact on the communities it serves.
A Dog’s Life is more than just a theatrical performance - it is an engaging journey into domestic animal welfare and primary health care.
Through the heartwarming friendship between a homeless child and a deserted dog, the production uses songs, interactive moments, and the life-like puppet Wafi to highlight the challenges faced by animals and their human companions.
By immersing children in this emotional and educational experience, the play encourages kindness, empathy, and a deeper understanding of pet care.
A highlight of every performance is the moment the audience is asked, “Who’s going home to give that extra bit of love to their pets?” Without fail, hands shoot into the air as enthusiastic voices shout, “Me, me, me!” - a testament to the lasting impact of the show. This response reaffirms Lunchbox Theatre’s belief in the power of theatre to educate, inspire, and create meaningful change.
After School Activities Programme (ASAP)
In addition to touring productions, Lunchbox Theatre is excited to expand its After School Activities Programme (ASAP) to schools in the region.
This initiative provides weekly drama and dance classes, offering children a creative outlet to develop confidence, self-expression, and teamwork skills. Schools interested in bringing ASAP to their learners are encouraged to reach out - Lunchbox Theatre welcomes the opportunity to collaborate and nurture young talent.
Lunchbox Theatre extends its heartfelt gratitude to the schools that welcomed them and to the learners who engaged with such curiosity and excitement.
Special thanks to the Karoo Animal Protection Society, Kloof and Highway SPCA and Oudtshoorn State Veterinarians who attended performances and supported the shared message of compassion and care for animals.
