OUDTSHOORN NEWS - Oudtshoorn has many historical sites and the advantage is that you can visit them all on foot.
Start at the CP Nel Museum, on the corner of Baron van Reede Street and Voortrekker Road, and obtain a copy of the Oudtshoorn Historical Walk. It contains a list of 27 historical landmarks in town and a map showing each building.
The CP Nel Museum proudly displays the original name of Oudtshoorn Courant carved into stone. The newspaper was founded in 1879. Every copy of the
newspaper since then is stored in the archives of the museum.
After visiting the CP Nel Museum the other two museums are a must. They are the Le Roux Dorpshuis in High Street and Arbeidsgenot in Jan van Riebeeck
Street where CJ Langenhoven lived. When walking to Arbeidsgenot, make sure you use the long suspension bridge in Church Street.
When walking along High Street, the history of several of the historical buildings around the Le Roux Dorpshuis can be read on drums in front of each building.
Apart from Arbeidsgenot, all the historical buildings are in and around the CBD.
Two of the most prominent buildings are the Dutch Reformed Church, which opened to the congregation in 1880 and the Queen’s Hotel also completed in 1880. It is the third oldest hotel in South Africa and the oldest one that was awarded four stars.
Visit the office of Oudtshoorn Tourism adjacent to the CP Nel Museum for any other queries about sights in and around town.
