OUDTSHOORN NEWS - According to a Ctrack report most hijackings take place on a Tuesday, while Arrive Alive has revealed that hijackings are more likely to occur in the driveways of residential areas.
It is, however, important to be vigilant every day of the week, not only as you're approaching your driveway on a Tuesday.
Here are some defensive driving tips that could help to avoid a hijacking:
Slow down
When your vehicle moves towards a red traffic light, reduce your speed so that you only arrive at the stop line when the robot turns green.
Keep your distance
When stopping behind another vehicle at an intersection, keep half a vehicle length between you and the vehicle in front to allow for a quick getaway in the event of a hijacking.
Keep driving
Don't respond to individuals indicating that your vehicle has a flat tyre or any other defect. If possible, drive to the nearest service station and check your vehicle there.
Be vigilant
When driving, be vigilant at all times and always travel with the car doors locked. Be aware of individuals approaching your vehicle at traffic lights and stop streets. Be especially observant when approaching your driveway. Avoid things that could distract you, such as other passengers, the radio and your cellphone.
Check if you're being followed
Keep an eye on the rear-view mirror to check if you are being followed. If it appears that someone is trailing you, keep your eye on the vehicle. If they keep on following you, drive to the nearest police station.
Arrive safely
As you near your home, be on the lookout for anything suspicious. If you see any unfamiliar vehicles or individuals, don't enter your driveway or stop to investigate; it's advised that you drive to your nearest police station.
