OUDTSHOORN NEWS - The Department of Correctional Services has launched Child Protection Week with the opening of a new crèche at Rooiheuwel, a rural farm about 10km outside Oudtshoorn.
Inmates have built the crèche as part of restoring the injustice they have done to the Oudtshoorn communities.
National Child Protection Week is commemorated annually to raise awareness of the rights of children. This year’s week is held from 29 May to 4 June under the theme “Let us protect children during Covid-19 and beyond”.
The week mobilises all sectors of society to care for and protect children and aims to raise awareness through social mobilisation and education programmes.
Teenage pregnancy
During this year’s Child Protection Week, special attention will be drawn to the national issue of teenage pregnancy. Statistics released by Statistics South Africa show that 34 587 teenagers gave birth in 2020.
These figures are a cause for concern and a concerted effort by all key stakeholders is needed to deal with the challenge.
Teenage pregnancy is a multifaceted problem that requires a holistic intervention and collaboration across society.
Parents should know where their children are at all times, know their friends and be clear with them about the places and homes they may visit.ACVV Oudtshoorn was also present at the launch of the crèche at Rooiheuwel farm.
Caring for children and keeping them safe is a shared responsibility. Parents and caregivers must be extra vigilant about the safety and whereabouts of children.
Non-governmental organisations, parents, child caregivers and teachers are called to take the lead in the fight against all forms of violence against children.
Help stop the cycle of neglect, abuse, violence and exploitation of children. Report child abuse to Childline South Africa’s toll-free line 0800 055 555.
ACVV Oudtshoorn was also present at the launch of the crèche at Rooiheuwel farm.
The message being sent out during Child Protection Week is that everyone is responsible for the protection of children.
