OUDTSHOORN CYCLING NEWS - Braam Wannenburg, a local cyclist, recently generated R8 898 for the conservation of endangered species when he successfully completed the Everesting-challenge on the Swartberg Pass. He cycled 20 times up and down this section of the mountain and it took him a whopping 176,14 km in 14 hours to complete it.
The climb itself was a steep 8 960m; slightly higher than the famous Mount Everest which stands at 8 848m.
The Cheetah Preservation Foundation (a non-profit organisation), is the sole beneficiary of the funds that were generated and is dedicated in loving memory of Louis Lategan (prominent cyclist in Oudtshoorn).
The rules of the Everesting-challenge is that participants can choose any hill in the world and then cycle it repeatedly in one activity until they climb 8 848m which is the equivalent height of Mount Everest. The participants' name will upon successful completion be inducted in the Hall of Fame alongside the best climbers in the world.
The fundraising campaign is still open and funds raised during this campaign will be contributed to the general well-being of the 30 cheetahs at the Cango Wildlife Ranch. These cheetahs are currently under the care of The Cheetah Preservation Foundation.
