OUDTSHOORN NEWS - The SWD Championships will take place at the De Jager Sports Complex in Oudtshoorn on Saturday 13 June with hundreds of athletes expected to compete in a full day of majorette, baton twirling and cheerleading action.
The annual championships start at 09:30 and will bring together competitors from primary schools, high schools and tertiary institutions across the region.
Athletes will compete in a variety of individual and team categories, including flag, mace, baton, drill, pom and performance cheer events.
The competition will begin with solo events, where athletes from schools such as St Mary's, Saturnus Primary, De Rust Primary, Bridgton Secondary School and Môrester Primary will showcase their individual skills. Solo flag, non-prop/pom, and mace categories will provide an early indication of the talent on display.
Team events are expected to draw significant attention, with schools including De Villiers Secondary, Sacred Heart Primary, Bergsig Primary, Saturnus Primary, Van Reede Junior, Van Reede Senior, Môrester Primary, De Rust Secondary, and Bridgton Secondary School competing throughout the day.
Performance cheer and hip hop divisions will add excitement to the programme, while group competitions in flag, mace, classic baton, stage baton, and drill events are expected to be among the highlights of the championships.
The prestigious drill competitions, scheduled for the afternoon session, will see schools compete in both small and large drill categories before the championships conclude with the prize-giving and colours ceremony at 16:30.
Organisers have expressed their gratitude to the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport for its support in making the championships possible.
Spectators will be able to enjoy a full day of competition at an entry fee of R20 per person, with proceeds contributing towards the successful hosting of the event.
The SWD Championships continue to provide a valuable platform for young athletes to showcase their talent, discipline and teamwork while competing against some of the best performers in the region.
