OUDTSHOORN NEWS - It was an early Christmas for two Oudtshoorn cricket supporters, Lleyton Avontuur and DeJean Oberholzer, who each pulled off spectacular one-handed catches in the stands during the inaugural YES PLAY PRO20 Cup one-handed catch competition.
Avontuur, who plays for the Garden Route Badgers Colts, was the first spectator to seize the opportunity during the Badgers’ historic victory over the star-studded Multiply Titans on Thursday, 29 October.
Oberholzer followed suit during the Badgers’ successful run chase against WSB Eastern Storm at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn on Saturday.
In both instances, the batsman who hit the boundary six was the hard-hitting Badgers top-order batsman Modise Maloka.
The competition has already attracted considerable interest, with 11 spectators across the country having successfully held on to their catches.
Garden Route Badgers chief executive officer Albertus Kennedy acknowledged that the opportunity to share in the jackpot had contributed to the impressive crowds supporting the team.
“The opportunity to share in the jackpot has certainly had a positive effect on the good crowds attending our matches,” Kennedy said.
“This has also been the culmination of several outstanding performances by the Garden Route Badgers, which have attracted strong support from spectators at our home fixtures.”
