OUDTSHOORN NEWS - The 2025 SAMCA (South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association) National Championships officially kicked off in Oudtshoorn last week, and local talent wasted no time making their mark.
In a week filled with fierce competition and amazing performances, Saturnus Primary School from Oudtshoorn emerged as the ultimate champions, walking away with the prestigious title of Overall Primary Schools Presidents League Champ of Champs. Sacred Heart Primary placed fourth in this category.
According to Murayda Human, the team co-ordinator, she and the coach, Jamey-Lee Botha, are extremely proud of their girls.
"This was our very first time competing at the SAMCA Nationals, and what an incredible experience it was! Earlier this year, we also took part in the SWD Championships, where we were crowned Champ of Champs. We are beyond happy and incredibly proud of what we've achieved!"
The national championships, hosted at the Oudtshoorn Recreational Grounds from 4 to 12 July, draw the best majorette and cheerleading teams nationwide. The cheerleading divisions wrapped up over the weekend, making way for the highly anticipated majorette section, which began on Monday 7 July.
Saturnus Primary was one of the first teams to take the field on Monday morning, setting the tone for what would become a historic achievement for the school.
They were joined by fellow Oudtshoorn schools, Sacred Heart Primary and De Rust Primary, who also performed with great spirit and skill in the Primary Schools Presidents League.
Results
Flag: Saturnus Primary won first place and Sacred Heart Primary came in 8th.
Mace: Saturnus Primary took second place.
Pom / Non-prop: Saturnus Primary won first place, and Sacred Heart Primary ended sixth
Baton (Classic): Sacred Heart Primary ended 5th followed by Saturnus Primary in 6th place.
Baton (Stage): Sacred Heart Primary ended 4th.
Drill:
Leader Section: Sacred Heart ended 4th and Saturnus Primary 7th.
Sub-Leader Section: Saturnus Primary ended 3rd followed by Sacred Heart in 4th place.
Squad Section: Saturnus Primary ended 2nd followed by Sacred Heart in third place.
Display: Saturnus Primary won first place and Sacred Heart placed 5th.
Overall Drill: Saturnus Primary won and Sacred Heart Primary placed 4th.
Both schools demonstrated exceptional teamwork, precision and enthusiasm, receiving praise from spectators and judges alike.
The High Presidents League started on Tuesday 8 July.
Môrester High School as well as Bridgton Secondary School went through to the finals which took place Wednesday 9 July.
