Cyclists participating in the Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek cycle race were also treated to the breath-taking vistas of the Swartberg Pass and virtually impossible-angled rock faces of Meiringspoort in what some have described as arguably the most scenic cycle route in SA.
That the organisers selected the most suitable person to design the route goes without saying – Meyer has over the years become a legend in his own right, is well-known in conservation and history circles and a familiar sight in Oudtshoorn with his unruly beard and bare feet. Don't let his eccentric looks fool you though, for here is a man with an astute intellect who knows his field and walks his talk.
It wasn't all fun and game for the cyclists, who will be finishing the final stage of this tour from George to Oudtshoorn tomorrow.
The past Monday about 30 cyclists, four whom are allergic to bee stings, were attacked during the first stage of the race by a swarm of bees between Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn.
Thirteen of them were hospitalised but were able to continue with the race after treatment at the Klein-Karoo Mediclinic.
In another incident Louis Knipe was hospitalised after falling while cycling at a speed of 60kph near the end of stage one. The impact of the fall shattered his helmet.
Sponsors of this event include Klein Karoo International, La Capra, First Ascent, Polar, Mavic, Wilde Fruit Juice, Scooters Pizza, GU Supplements, Sludge Products, Continental Tyres, Squirt Wax Lubricants, Nomadik Stretch Tents & Canopies and Castle Lite.
