OUDTSHOORN NEWS - Unity, community pride and sporting excellence were on full display this past weekend when the Bhongolethu Stadium hosted the 2026 Tshezi Foundation Freedom Day Tournament.
Held in celebration of South Africa’s democracy, the event brought together more than 500 participants from across the Greater Oudtshoorn area.
Inspired by former President Nelson Mandela’s belief that sport has the power to unite people, the tournament created a platform for local talent while strengthening community bonds through football.
A total of 18 local teams competed for top honours, but it was Birds Football Club who emerged as the dominant force on the field. Their impressive performance secured them the championship title, along with a R10,000 cash prize, a new soccer kit, gold medals and the tournament trophy.
Bhongweni FC delivered a strong challenge throughout the competition and finished as runners-up, earning R5 000, silver medals, a trophy and a full training kit.
Beyond the competitive action, the tournament transformed Bhongolethu Stadium into a lively community celebration. Live entertainment kept spectators engaged throughout the weekend, while partnerships with local organisations and businesses ensured the smooth running of the event.
The Tshezi Foundation worked closely with the Executive Mayor, Zoe Tyatya, Pika Tech Solutions, OLFA, and local businesses including Kolas Car Wash and the Noluvo Mlolomba Food Court to make the tournament possible.
Event organiser Bandile Mbalo expressed his appreciation to the many individuals and community members who contributed behind the scenes.
“This was about more than football. It was about bringing young people together through something they love and understand,” he said.
He extended special thanks to Ayanda Gantsu, Zoe Tyatya, Lizo Ngalo, Jabu Toto, Zolani Majola, Noluvo Mlolomba, Rebecca Hanse, Nomsa Jaxa, Nomawethu Nyuka, Alubabalo Nkukwana, Joy Nyuka, Patrick Nyuka, Loyiso Mbalo, Thembinkosi Goli, Thembela Gangathela, Vuyani Botha, Siphosethu Mhlebi, Gabriel Majola, Patrick Japhta, Sizwe Yenge, Mzukisi Ntambo, Andile Xelegu, Abongile Mdamba, Thembinkosi Madikane and the broader Bhongolethu community for their dedication and support.
As the final whistle signalled the end of another successful Freedom Day celebration, the tournament once again highlighted the depth of football talent in Oudtshoorn and reinforced sport’s enduring role in uniting communities.
