Study: SA has 9th highest murder rate

NATIONAL NEWS - A researcher at the Institute of Security Studies (ISS) claims South Africa has no integrated strategy to address violent crime.

The latest World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics show the country's murder rate is second only to Lesotho in Africa and ninth globally.

ISS researcher Johan Burger is concerned that South Africa is not equipped to reverse the worrying trend.

“We don’t have an integrated strategy to deal with this ongoing violence.”

Burger says a number of reasons could be fuelling the country's alarming murder rate.
