NATIONAL NEWS - Today, as South Africa observes National Police Officer Day, we pause to honour the tireless efforts and sacrifices of our police officers who work to uphold law and order, safeguard communities, and ensure the safety of all citizens.
The role of a police officer is more than a profession—it is a calling defined by bravery, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to justice.
“The work of our police officers often goes unnoticed, but it is their dedication and sacrifice that form the backbone of our safety and security,” said Major General (Retired) Oswald Reddy, the Western Cape Police Ombudsman.
As we celebrate their contributions, General Reddy also reminds officers of the sacred oath they have sworn to uphold, urging them to embody the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and compassion.
“Every officer carries the trust of the public,” the Ombudsman added. “This trust must be nurtured through fair, ethical, and accountable actions that reflect the values of justice and service.”
In reaffirming their commitment to service excellence, the Ombudsman emphasized the importance of the Batho Pele principles, which advocate for putting people first, treating all citizens with dignity and respect, and ensuring transparency and accountability.
Upholding these principles, alongside procedural justice—such as neutrality, active listening, and respectful treatment—helps foster trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
“When police officers embody these principles, they strengthen the trust with the public, laying the foundation for safer and more cohesive communities,” said the Ombudsman.
The Ombudsman also paid tribute to those officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
“We honour their memory and their ultimate sacrifice. They remind us of the immense responsibility carried by those who wear the badge and inspire us to continue striving for a just and peaceful society,” the Ombudsman stated.
On this National Police Officer Day, citizens in the Western Cape are encouraged to thank the officers in their communities and support efforts to build a safer future. Accountability in policing is a shared responsibility, and the Ombudsman recognizes the crucial role of Metro Police, LEAP, Community Police Forums, and Neighbourhood Watch structures in working alongside the police to ensure community safety and trust.
The Ombudsman concluded: “Should members of the public encounter challenges with police service delivery in their communities, we encourage them to utilize independent services like the Office of the Western Cape Police Ombudsman. Policing is a partnership between law enforcement and the public. Together, we can ensure that accountability, service, and justice remain at the heart of policing in the Province.”
