MOTORING NEWS - The new F750 GS and F850 GS are targeted squarely at their respective clientele.
The F750 GS is designed for all riders who prefer the sensation of a travel enduro in combination with a low seat height and high cost-effectiveness.
On the other hand, the new F 850 GS now offers more power and torque, and features even more distinctive touring characteristics, coupled with supreme off-road ability and reduced fuel consumption.
Displacement for both is 853cc. The F750 GS produces 57kW at 7 500rpm and 83Nm at 6 000rpm, while the new F850 GS generates 70kW at 8 250rpm and 92Nm at 6 250rpm.
Both bikes have a powerful sound by employing a crankshaft with a 90° journal offset and a 270/450° firing interval.
Unwanted vibrations are absorbed by the new engine's two counterbalance shafts.
A self-amplifying, anti-hopping clutch provides reduction in the need for hand clutch operating force while the drop in engine drag torque also enhances safety on the road.
Power transmission to the rear wheel comes from the six-speed gearbox with secondary drive that is now positioned on the left-hand side.
Options in the riding modes are for road and rain, plus ABS and ASC, which ensure plenty of riding enjoyment and enhanced safety as standard.
The F750 GS and F850 GS can be fitted with "Pro riding" modes which add Dynamic, Enduro and, in the case of the F 850GS, Enduro Pro to the suite.
DTC dynamic traction control and banking capable ABS Pro are also available.
The bridge frame of the new GS models in the F series is made of deep-drawn, welded components. It integrates the 2-cylinder, in-line engine as a co-supporting element and offers benefits in terms of torsional rigidity and robustness.
Both bikes at the launch.
The fuel tank has been placed in the classic position between the seat bench and the steering head, for optimised packaging and an improved centre of gravity.
The F750 GS and F850 GS has a new design which is described as more dynamic and masculine.
In addition to the basic version, the new F models are also available with style variations. The rally style variant is exclusive to the new F850 GS and places particular emphasis on its off-road capabilities.
The new GS models of the F series are being launched with a range of equipment options.
These include an LED daytime running light to complement the LED headlight.
Connectivity is enhanced by a multi-function instrument cluster and 6,5" full-colour TFT display with the option of an intelligent emergency call function.
The new BMW F750 GS and F850 GS will be available in South Africa in the second quarter of 2018.
