OUDTSHOORN NEWS - They came out in force to support a local animal welfare organisation. Residents, local businesses, volunteers and even helpers from out of town rolled up their sleeves and achieved what once seemed impossible.
Oudtshoorn Dogs in Need (Odin) completed its relocation to a new temporary premises last weekend. On Saturday 31 May, they watched the final sunset over their former home at Tantivvey Guest Farm in Blanco - closing one chapter and starting another.
While construction of additional pens, camps and dog runs is still under way at the new undisclosed location, the bulk of the move is done - and so is the team. "I don't think any of us have slept in the past six weeks. It's been one helluva ride," said Odin founder Colleen Smith. "George came to the party. It's unimaginable how the community pulled together. To everyone who took the time to help us - thank you!"
Earlier this year, Odin was given until the end of May to vacate its premises in Blanco. Despite the logistical challenges, it remained fully operational throughout the move. Many animals were placed in foster care with willing community members, while others found their forever homes.
"We were under pressure, but wonderful new opportunities have emerged. The former premises weren't ideal for kennelling, but in just six weeks, we removed all the dogs and dismantled the structures. Thanks to the overwhelming support from the Georgites, every dog was safely relocated. Not a single dog had to be put to sleep throughout the entire process," Smith said.
Odin continues to operate as normal and still relies heavily on public donations. To make any contributions, Smith can be contacted on 072 084 1374.
Donations can also be dropped off at shop 5A, Doneraile Square. The organisation also remains actively involved in community outreach efforts.
Plans are also under way to launch a scheduled pop-up adoption venue, where members of the public can walk dogs, adopt them or drop off donations. The initiative will also allow schools to get involved by doing community service, and people can take dogs on outings.
Further details about Odin's new home and plans will be announced soon.
