OUDTSHOORN NEWS - The Van Reede Majorettes delivered an exceptional performance at the South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association (Samca) National Championships, held in Johannesburg from 8 to 11 July, returning to Oudtshoorn with an impressive medal haul and top national rankings.
According to Ronald Presher, deputy principal of Van Reede School, which competed in the prestigious elite league (A league), in which South Africa's highest-performing schools and clubs contest national honours, both the Van Reede junior and senior teams showcased outstanding discipline, precision and consistency throughout the four-day championship.
Junior team earns national runner-up title
The Van Reede junior secured podium finishes across both the groups and drill categories.
In the groups division, the team claimed second place in the pom non-prop, baton, flag and mace events.
In the small drill category, the leader finished seventh and the sub-leaders sixth, while both the squad and display teams earned second place, resulting in an overall second-place finish.
They maintained their high standard in the large drill category, in which the sub-leaders placed third and the leader fifth. The squad and display teams once again secured second place, earning the team another overall second-place finish.
Their consistent performances throughout the championships culminated in the prestigious Champion of Champions competition, in which the Van Reede juniors were crowned South Africa's second-ranked junior team.
Seniors make Van Reede history
The Van Reede senior team also produced one of its strongest performances at a national championship, recording the highest number of elite league podium finishes ever achieved by a Van Reede senior team.
In the groups division, the seniors claimed second place in the mace group event and third place in the pom non-prop, baton and flag group events.
In the small drill category, the sub-leaders delivered an outstanding second-place finish. The leader placed sixth, while both the squad and display teams finished fifth, earning the team fifth place overall.
In the large drill competition, the leader finished sixth, the sub-leaders eighth, the squad eighth and the display team sixth, securing sixth place overall for the team.
The championships concluded with the Champion of Champions rankings, in which the Van Reede seniors finished fifth overall in South Africa.
The team's four podium finishes in the groups division, as well as the second-place finish by the small drill sub-leaders, mark the most successful elite league performance ever achieved by a Van Reede senior team at the championships.
