OUDTSHOORN NEWS - Oudtshoorn Municipality has assembled a joint operational team to attend to the aftermath of the heavy rains that hit the Little Karoo today.
The Municipal emergency team is currently attending to a number of complaints, which among others include the following:
- Flooded houses in Volmoed, Kliplokasie and Rosevalley informal settlement area
- Roofs of houses were blown away by strong winds in Volmoed
- Eskom power pole and a tree blown away in Volmoed
The team, that consist of disaster management, fire and rescue, traffic services, law enforcement, human settlements, cleansing services, streets and storms water and communication services has been tasked to attend to the incidents.
The Municipal Community Services Director, Mr. Thomas Matthee, who is leading the Joint Operational Centre (JOC) encourages the public to report any incidents that may be needing the attention of the joint operation team.
“We have earlier today received an influx of calls to our call centre and therefore could not attend to all callers. We think that there may be other incidents that could not have been registered with us. Hence we appeal to the public to call our call centre at 044 203 7800.
“Our team is ready to attend to the public’s complaints. We have sent the team out to the entire Greater Oudtshoorn to assess damages that may have been caused by the stormy weather, with a particular focus on the informal settlements of Rosevalley, GG Camp, Kanaal area, Volmoek, Kliplokasie, De Rust and Dysselsdorp.
Earlier today, the municipal electricians attended to sporadic power outages that were either caused by trees branches falling over power lines or thunderstorms and lightning. The power has since been restored in all affected areas in the Greater Oudtshoorn.
MEIRINGSPOORT TEMPORARILY CLOSED
Meanwhile, the Garden Route District Municipality Disaster Management Centre has reported earlier today the Meiringspoort Pass between Oudtshoorn and Beaufort West has been temporarily closed at the De Rust side, Klaarstroom and Beaufort West, due to the heavy rains.
The closure of the pass is, according to the head of the Garden Route District Municipality’s Disaster Management, Gerhard Otto, due to streams of water flowing down the pass after the torrential rains today in the Central and Little Karoo. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
