LOCAL NEWS - Passengers flying between George and Johannesburg will soon be able to give the hustle and bustle of OR Tambo International Airport and the surrounding highway traffic a miss.
Starting 14 March, FlySafair will be resuming its daily return flight between Lanseria International Airport north of Johannesburg and George Airport.
According to travelnews.co.za, the FlySafair Boeing 737 will depart Lanseria at 10:00 and arrive in George at 12:20. The flight will leave George at 12:55 and arrive at Lanseria Airport at 14:55.
On 5 December FlySafair posted the good news on X: “Lanseria to George is back! Starting 14 March, FlySafair will operate daily flights between these two destinations. Explore the Garden Route’s beauty - beaches, forests and the stunning Outeniqua Mountains. Tickets from R1 162.”
Win-win
With semigration to the Garden Route and tourism in the area growing year on year, this is a sound business decision for FlySafair, while also making the lives of many of those living in the Garden Route much easier when travelling to Gauteng.
Landing at Lanseria makes many a commute from the airport much less stressful – also for friends, business colleagues or family tasked to fetch the traveller at the airport.
FlySafair's announcement on X.
This is good news for the city of George and the towns in the Garden Route as a whole as Lanseria is situated to the north of Johannesburg and near Sandton – making the airport an attractive option for tourists and business people alike.
Covid-19 and the following demise of Mango and Kulula brought all the flights between George and Lanseria to an end.
Overbooking
Meanwhile, following a complaint by a FlySafair customer who was bumped off a flight while he had a valid, paid ticket, FlySafair apologised and admitted that the airline overbooks flights.
They said they overbook to keep ticket prices as low as possible.
The company said it offers compensation for passengers who are not able to take the flight they’ve booked.
Apparently overbooking is a common practice by airlines and even the Consumer Protection Act makes provision for the practice.
Most on-time airline
Amid the somewhat negative publicity, FlySafair announced yesterday that aviation analyst, Cirium’s latest On-Time Performance Review named it the Most On-Time Airline in Africa and the Middle East.
