OUDTSHOORN NEWS - Thirty-five informal female waste pickers and five Retain, Re-use and Recycle (RRR) female employees have received dignity bags from the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEA&DP) and the Western Cape Recycling Action Group.
This event formed part of their Give Dignity Campaign.
The dignity bags handover took place at RRR and was attended by the female informal waste pickers of the Oudtshoorn Municipal Grootkop waste disposal facility, officials from the DEA&DP, employees of RRR and Rodwell Witbooi, Manager: Solid Waste, of Oudtshoorn Municipality.
Belinda Langenhoven of the DEA&DP gave a presentation on the importance of waste management and the significant roles of waste pickers in the waste management sector. She also extended her appreciation to RRR for the role they play in the support of waste pickers.
Langenhoven listed the sanitary products contained in the dignity bags, the correct use thereof and the proper management of sanitary waste.
She highlighted the reusable sanitary pad and the durability of the pad that can last for five years.
