LIFESTYLE NEWS - As the world prepares for World Blood Donor Day on 14 June, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has launched its “Be The Lifeline – Give Blood. Give A Tomorrow” campaign, marking 25 years of saving lives through blood donation.
The campaign not only commemorates a global moment of awareness but also celebrates SANBS’s quarter-century milestone as a critical pillar of South Africa’s healthcare system.
Every donation helps shape someone’s tomorrow
At the heart of the campaign is a simple but powerful message: every unit of blood represents a future still unfolding.
From mothers holding their newborns for the first time, to accident victims receiving emergency care, cancer patients continuing treatment, and children overcoming life-threatening conditions, blood donors play a vital - yet often unseen - role.
Each donation contributes to moments many take for granted: a young adult gaining independence, a small business opening its doors, or a child stepping into school for the first time.
SANBS leaders highlight life-saving impact
SANBS CEO Ravi Reddy said the milestone is a testament to the generosity of South Africans.
“For 25 years, South Africans have consistently shown extraordinary generosity through blood donation. Every donor who walks through our doors becomes part of someone else’s tomorrow,” he said.
SANBS Reputation and Communication Manager Sifiso Khoza emphasised that even a single donation can have far-reaching effects.
“Behind every successful transfusion is a donor who chose to help someone they may never meet. Blood donation is one of the most powerful acts of humanity because a single donation can save multiple lives,” Khoza said.
Focus on trust, gratitude and a new generation of donors
The “Be The Lifeline” campaign places strong emphasis on recognising long-standing donors while encouraging younger South Africans to step forward and become regular donors.
Through storytelling, SANBS will highlight real-life experiences of donors, recipients and healthcare workers, reinforcing the human impact behind each donation.
Call to action: become part of the lifeline
As part of its World Blood Donor Day drive, SANBS is urging all eligible South Africans to contribute to a sustainable national blood supply.
“Blood cannot be manufactured. It can only come from people willing to give a part of themselves to save another life,” Khoza added.
With its 25-year legacy as a foundation, SANBS hopes the campaign will inspire a new wave of donors to step up – ensuring that millions more tomorrows can be realised.
