The Eden District Municipality's Youth Office in partnership with the Department of Transport and Public Works has identified an opportunity for unemployed youth, residing in rural areas, to obtain their learner's licences.
This opportunity is aimed at making a difference in the lives of rural youth, especially those who have finished school and have no means to further their studies.
The programme is designed to assist young people to obtain a learner's licence that will be a stepping stone towards employment. The Department of Transport and Public Works will fund the entire programme, which includes the learner's licence classes, ID photos, bookings, as well as the issuing of the learner's licences.
Advertisements in order to apply and be part of this programme were placed at strategic places by the local municipal youth coordinators.
Requirements for applicants:
- Permanent residents within the Eden municipal jurisdiction area;
- Candidates must be unemployed;
- Candidates must at least have passed Grade 9 and able to read and write; and
- Candidates must be between the ages of 18-35 years (a certified copy of identification document (ID) must be attached).
After completion of the classes the students will be required to write a qualifying test.
The official launch, conducted by the Executive Mayor, Wessie van der Westhuizen, took place in Dysselsdorp on Friday 22 August. In the Little Karoo. The following areas form part of the project: Kannaland: Van Wyksdorp, Van Zylsdamme, Hoeko, Calitzdorp, Zoar and Ladismith.
Oudtshoorn: Dysselsdorp, De Rust, Rose Valley and Volmoed.
