As SA’s top rated* pet insurer, we at dotsure.co.za often get asked what our favourite breeds are. Our answer is always the same: rescues! With so many adorable dogs and cats seeking loving homes, we firmly believe in #AdoptDontShop.
We asked some of the pet parents in the dosture.co.za family to share their rescued stories with us. Here are some of our favourites:
STORM
In 2011 I lived in a small farm town called Barrydale. This beautiful child of mine was rescued by my uncle, at 4 weeks old, from a dump next to a liquor store. When I saw her, her name came to me immediately: Storm.
She was violently ill from the worms and mange, and she would scratch herself until she bled. It was incredibly difficult for me to see this little puppy crying from scratching herself open due to the itching, and the medication had not yet started working. I used to pick her up and wrap her in her red fleece blanket, and walk through the house, rocking her in my arms until she would stop crying and fall asleep.
After a few weeks, a local farmer came to our door and advised us that he has an Alsatian and a Rottweiler who had puppies, and 1 puppy was stolen by one of his workers, who told him the puppy was taken away from next to the liquor store. He told the farmer who it was that took the puppy from the dump. And thus, the farmer tracked me down.
The farmer told me it was actually his puppy that I had, and I was heartbroken that I would have to give my rescued Storm back to her rightful owner. The farmer saw how I had cared for Storm and got her back to full health, and he saw she was happy and he asked me to please keep her, as he could see she had crept deep into my heart.
Today, 10 years later, she still sleeps in a human bed, with her head on the pillow, and she will turn to stare at you until you cover her with the duvet.

My sweet baby boy was only a few months old when we adopted him from ODIN. I walked past his kennel, and he was crying so much that I asked if they could let him out – the moment I held him I knew I had found my baby!
He is almost three years old and my best friend! When I do anything around the house, he will follow me and just sit with me until I finish. The amount of excitement he shows when I get home after work is so precious to me and makes me feel so loved. He has a wonderful personality and is almost like a human in the body of a fur baby!

BEA & AUTUMN
I saw a beautiful, one-eared fur baby at ODIN, and I just had to call her my own. The day we went to collect Bea, I had the strangest connection with another fur-ball, Autumn. So, I took both home! They connected instantly -- just like they were from the same litter.
Unfortunately, we had to send Bea to kitty heaven quite early in her life (3 years old) due to unforeseen kidney failure - I'm glad to say that she finally had her forever home, even if it was just for a year.
It's been about five months now, and I still struggle to come to terms with her loss. Bea was a vocal cat, and we had entire conversations with each other, so now the house is quiet. Poor Autumn will go on endless quests through the house, looking for Bea and screaming to find her. She has now filled a big hole in my heart. Where I go - she goes.
Adopting a cat, or dog, fills holes in your life and heart, which you never knew you had.

HUNTER, ICE, OUNOOI, SNOWY & XENA
I am a sucker for rescues! I have 5 huskies that we take for daily walks as the yard is too small for them. They will all go for the baboons here as a pack. They do not like cats, rabbits, birds, or snakes unfortunately.
Hunter is the most talkative, Snowy is the alpha besides me, Ounooi has now found her vocals, Ice is a mean hunter and Xena loves everybody.
I feel God has given them to me, without them my life is meaningless.

FLASH
My baby dog Flash was a rescue/lockdown foster fail. I initially started fostering him when lockdown started, he instantly became part of the family & we just couldn’t give him back. Flash quickly stole everyone’s heart!
We are not quite sure what breed he is: they told me his dad is a Boerboel and the mom is a “medium sized brown dog”. Save to say we got a human in dog form.
He loves hugs, snacks and causing chaos in the neighbourhood.
He is the best foster fail we could’ve asked for ??
