OUDTSHOORN NEWS - The St Paul General Apostolic Church in Zion of RSA will be celebrating their 58th anniversary during the Easter weekend from Friday 30 March to Sunday 1 April in Oudtshoorn.
According to Siyabulela Rodney Gangathele, secretary general of the church, the celebrations will take place in Xola Street, Bongolethu, and will start with a service on Friday at 14:00.
"On 1 April at 10:00 the bishop will render a service in which he will bless and pray for the community of Oudtshoorn and also praying for rain in Western Cape."
According to him the church was established on 6 April 1960 and was registered as a non-profit organisation.
"The church was established in Klippies Eiland, now known as the Oudtshoorn North area."
The church was founded by the late archbishop Daniel Gangathele and the first lady of the church.
"They started the church in their house with their children. The reason behind the establishment was that the founder had a dream and a vision for the community of the greater Oudtshoorn.
"He dreamt of social and spiritual upliftment of the community by introducing an indigenous Zionist church in the community."
Two years after the establishment of the church, they started to recruit congregants at Dysselsdorp, Stormdriftdam, Klaarstrom, Prince Albert, Volmoed, and thereafter, recruited the whole of the Southern Cape and some areas in the Eastern Cape.
"In the early 70s they were removed from Klippies Eiland by the government to Bongolethu township, where they had a vision of building churches around the Southern Cape and in the 90s they started to build a church in Bongolethu and extended to George in the community of Thembalethu and currently busy with the building of the church in Dysseldorp."
