OUDTSHOORN NEWS - The Oudtshoorn Municipality is currently doing road assessment under the supervision of the newly appointed Senior Manager: Roads, Transport and Stormwater, Nkululeko Kelepu, which will extend from municipal to provincial roads.
According to Aurelia Mle, spokesperson for the municipality, the Roads, Transport and Stormwater team will be focussing on road defects, the extent of defects and surfacing as well as determining the age of roads to comply with the mission statement of the municipality to provide innovative, effective, and efficient services.
“This will ensure that the municipality knows its road network, maintenance needs and repairs for reconstruction. This assessment will include stormwater and traffic-calming devices.”
Mle further stated that the Street and Stormwater team will be working in different areas, for the next two to three months and will also continue to work in all areas for the necessary repairs and maintenance work, including cutting, repair base course and compact new wearing course. The patching of roads will be done daily when the weather allows.
The Roads, Transport and Stormwater Department will thus embark on an area-based assessment and repair programme, which will include emergency repairs and complaints lodged by the public.
“As of Monday road assessments of road defects and severity were already underway in East Bank, West Bank and Oudtshoorn North. In the same areas, the team have a scheduled time to also repair roads, clean the stormwater systems as well as repair sidewalks that will continue until Friday, 02 June.”
She said Bongolethu, Bridgton and Smartie Town will be next on the list from 5 June until 30 June where assessments, repairs and cleaning will be done. Dysselsdorp and De Rust are scheduled from 27 June until 14 July.

Chip and spray together with Slurry Seal shall also commence from June 2023 if the weather permits. All works are weather dependent, and all necessary precautions shall be taken in ensuring that tasks are performed. A second phase of the programme will be announced soon.
The Executive Mayor of the Greater Oudtshoorn, Alderman Chris Macpherson, says the appointment of a dedicated and experienced senior manager is an asset to the Municipality and the difference which has been brought about is already visible.
"I am confident that Mr Kelepu will work according to a strict program to ensure that the different teams are deployed to address the serious issues of our roads and other infrastructure. I have already had several discussions with him and it is clear that he understands the challenges we face due to the post being vacant for many months and he is more than capable of addressing them."
