UNIONDALE NEWS - Consistent efforts by rural police stations such as Uniondale in the Southern Cape to eradicate illegal dealing in drugs and liquor is paying off, following the arrest of a 26-year-old renown dealer in the Langkloof area.
The police in Uniondale acted on a hint received from a member of the community who alerted them that the suspect was transporting liquor illegally earlier today, Sunday 22 August.
“They operationalized the information and during patrols spotted the suspect’s vehicle, a silver Toyota en-route to the town Uniondale, travelling on the R-62-Main road at about 11:00,” said Provincial Police Spokesperson Capt. Malcolm Pojie.
“Members pulled over the vehicle and upon searching it, found 18-cases of beer with a total volume of 163 litres of beer which exceeded the permissible amount one is allowed to have in your possession. Furthermore, it is a direct violation of the Disaster Management Act under Alert Level 3 which prohibits the selling and/or transport of liquor over weekends, from Friday to Sunday.”
The liquor was confiscated and handed in as evidence whilst the suspect was arrested and later charged in terms of the DMA Regulations as well as contravention of the Liquor Act.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Uniondale magistrates’ court on mention charges tomorrow, Monday, 23 August.
Eden Cluster commander’ Maj Gen Oswald Reddy has commended the members involved for their commitment and perseverance to bring illegal drug/liquor dealers to book.
“Even though it seems not to be a great amount of liquor, it has a devastating effect on the socio economic behaviour and the prevalence of crime in a town such as Uniondale where the unemployment figures are exceedingly high,” said Pojie.
Gen Reddy commended the community for their vigilance and for sharing such vital information with the local police station, therefore strengthening the relationship between local SAPS and the community at large.
