The recent partnership between the Hessequa Municipality and local tourism stakeholders has resulted in the re-birth of tourism to this unique and beautiful region. "Our new brand identity, The Explorer’s Garden Route, speaks to our segments that want to venture beyond the beaten tourist paths and dive deeper into authentic local culture, and connect in meaningful ways. Not many who drive past this beautiful Garden Route gateway area are aware of its rich history and diversity" says Elana Lotriet, the LED head of the Hessequa Region.
"Strong evidence exists that the human genetic revolution occurred along the Southern Cape coast around 164 000 years ago," explained Jan de Vynck, an archaeologist and botany student living in the Hessequa district. "The environment and plant sources of the area all contributed to the survival of humanity."
During the recent launch of The Explorer’s Garden Route, Riversdale resident Danie Crafford explained, "The N2, that runs through our region [Heidelberg, Riversdale and Albertinia] carries around 3 000 vehicles per hour. In this current economic climate, we would be fools not to entice this passing trade into our town to share in the unique experiences we have to offer while bolstering our economy at the same time."
According to tourism consultant Shaun van Eck, this initiative is set to act as a blueprint for local tourism destinations throughout the country. "It is based on the foundation of a proactive partnership between the district government and private enterprise and focuses on creating sustainability for tourism businesses in smaller destinations."
According to Van Eck, most towns and villages in South Africa have limited tourism budgets that do not allow them to market their region competitively. "The municipal authority has thus focused on building the partnership with tourism business and more specifically on the experiences they deliver."
