OUDTSHOORN NEWS - “We are aware of the voice notes that are doing rounds on social media about an alleged case reportedly Bongolethu Police Station in Oudtshoorn. We would like to discourage the community of the Greater Oudtshoorn for spreading these voice notes that could potentially cause a panic in the community.
We encourage that each and every citizen abide by the rules and regulations of the Nationwide Lockdown,” said the Executive Mayor of the Greater Oudtshoorn, Councillor Colan Sylvester.
“The Joint Operational Centre team works around the clock to combat the spread of the COVID-19 in and around the Greater Oudtshoorn. The JOC consists of the Oudtshoorn Municipality’s Disaster Management, Fire & Rescue officials, other relevant municipal officials, Department of Health, South African Police Service, Department of Social Development (DSD) and other relevant stakeholders. Today, a meeting was held with the South African National Defence Force’s Infantry School based in Oudtshoorn to intensify the team that is fighting against this pandemic,” Mayor Sylvester added.
“Today, our law enforcement and traffic officers arrested seven taxi drivers (four in Oudtshoorn and three in Dysselsdorp) for contravening the regulation on Lockdown. They will appear in Court on Monday, 30 March 2020. The law enforcement officers also visited 40 Spaza shops in Bridgton after 18:00 to check compliance with regulations. Nineteen of the visited shops were closed by 18:00, which means they complied with the regulations; 21 of the shops were instructed to close immediately as they did not complied with the regulations. The operation is still continuing to ensure the safety of the people of the Greater Oudtshoorn.”
“As this multi-stakeholder team, we urge the citizens of the Greater Oudtshoorn to heed the call to Stay At Home. Be safe and regularly clean our hands and our surroundings to stay free of the COVID-19. The spread of this virus can only stop if we work together. The existence of the Corona Virus in our country is a reality. If we continue to abide by the regulations of the Lockdown we will lessen the number in new infections by a great number and save our lives and of our loved ones, families, colleagues and friends’.”
“We furthermore want request the essential workers to also abide by the rules and be vigilant in their work environments. Institutions that are, in terms of the recently released Disaster Management Regulations, classified as essential to exercise precaution and protect their workers. The lockdown is intended at keeping everyone safe, but if we continue to breach the rules and regulations of the lockdown, we are putting our lives in danger.”
