VAN WYKSDORP NEWS - A group of activists, community members and friends gathered at the Ladismith Magistrates' Court today, 30 July, where the alleged 16-year-old killer of Valerie Enzer (79) of Van Wyksdorp, made his second court appearance since his arrest.
Enzer's body was found on the stoep of her home on her farm Doringkloof just outside the town by a farm worker on 14 July and the teenager was arrested mere hours later.
The accused is facing charges of murder, house robbery, rape, theft and stock theft. He first appeared in court on 16 July where he abandoned his right to apply for bail.
At the time of her death, Enzer, of Scottish descent, had been living on her farm for 18 years.
Eleanore Spies, DA constituency head of Kannaland, says the gathering at court follows the successful collection of over 180 petition signatures, which will be formally handed over to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
“The focus of this mobilisation is to demand attention to the urgent issues of GBV, violence against the elderly and farmers, and to demand justice for Valerie. This action underscores the community's commitment to standing against violence in all its forms and advocating for the rights and dignity of all individuals, particularly the most vulnerable.
"As the Democratic Alliance, we stand in solidarity with Valerie’s family and loved ones during this critical moment. Our message is one of hope, resilience, and an unwavering demand for justice. We call on all stakeholders to take decisive action against GBV and ensure that justice is served for Valerie and all victims of such heinous crimes.”
Eric Ntabazalila, spokesperson of the NPA, said the case was postponed to 13 August for further investigation.
“The DNA report, fingerprint reports and some statements and or affidavits are still outstanding. He will be kept in a place of safety until his next appearance,” Ntabazalila said.
