The course, near Vereeniging, was offered by the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ) through Bass Lake Adventures near Henley on Klip a fortnight ago.
"Although I was privileged to cut my 4x4 teeth with the legendary Don Green, from Land Rover, it was time for a refresher course," she said. "We are fortunate in having so many scenic drives where some 4x4 experience makes it possible to get close to nature.
"It goes without saying that the skill of off-road driving had developed since legislation made it necessary to have formal training to visit parks and reserves. So getting an invitation from the guild to participate meant getting into gear for this challenge."
Suzuki made their tough and versatile Jimny as well as a Grand Vitara available for the challenging course. The course included training on the use of the 4x4 system, terrain assessment, gear selection, obstacle negotiation and basic recovery with safety considerations as well as protection of the environment.
The day's training was sponsored by Suzuki at a water-filled quarry and Bass Lake Adventures offered obstacle driving varying from forest to grasslands, soil to gravel as well as rock and water driving under Alan's watchful and knowledgeable eye.
The course was undertaken as part of the SAGMJ requirement that all full members of the guild in good standing should attend an advanced driving course regularly to be up to date regarding technology and driving skill.
Anica has also successfully completed some other advanced and dynamic driving courses by the Volkswagen Academy and BMW as part of her ongoing professional development.
