MOTORING NEWS - Modern cars have many more electrical consumers than cars from the past, with more complicated electrical systems.
A reliable battery is more important than ever before, and if a car's battery becomes drained in a short time - while parked overnight for instance - there are some basic troubleshooting tips to try before calling the professionals.
First ensure the battery terminals are clean and tight and the water levels are correct if your battery isn't the sealed type.
Then check the door switches to ensure they function properly.
A switch that isn't making proper contact could result in the interior lights remaining on, draining the battery.
If all is well, check the boot light switch to ensure that it too is functioning properly.
If the problem persists, the alarm or immobiliser may be drawing excessive current while the ignition is off, or the battery may be at the end of its useful life and it would be wise to consult a specialist.
