VAN WYKSDORP NEWS - In a heartwarming show of community care, Servamus Properties, in collaboration with The Old Post House and Van Wyksdorp Backpackers, launched a meaningful initiative in the tiny Karoo village this Easter aimed at supporting local pet owners.
Traditionally, Easter in Van Wyksdorp has been celebrated with the distribution of Easter eggs to the local children - a much-loved annual tradition.
However, this year, recognising the growing financial pressures faced by many households, the organisers made a conscious decision to shift their focus.
Instead of Easter treats, the initiative centred on addressing a more pressing need within the community - ensuring that pets are cared for and do not go hungry.
Free pet food was distributed to local families, with an overwhelmingly positive and heartfelt response from the community.
The initiative not only provided practical support but also highlighted the strong sense of care and compassion that exists within Van Wyksdorp.
Ongoing initiative
Importantly, this effort marks the beginning of an ongoing outreach programme.
As part of this initiative, Conlan Fitzhenty, the son of local business woman, Wendi Skowronek, will be driving through the area on a weekly basis to identify pets in need and provide food where necessary.
This continued effort aims to support pet owners who may be struggling and to ensure that animal welfare remains a priority within the community.
“This initiative is very close to our hearts,” said Skowronek of Servamus Properties. “Looking after animals is part of looking after our community.”
The project reflects a growing awareness of the importance of animal welfare in rural areas, particularly during challenging economic times.
Skowronek says simple acts of kindness and collaboration continue to strengthen the fabric of the Van Wyksdorp community, proving that even small changes can make a meaningful and lasting difference.
