OUDTSHOORN NEWS - Emergency and disaster management teams are continuing operations at Cango Mountain Resort, where guests have remained temporarily stranded since 6 May due to severe flooding and extensive damage to access roads.
According to Mkhululi Yekani, the municipal manager of the Oudtshoorn Municipality, the situation is being actively managed by the municipality in coordination with emergency services, disaster management officials, and provincial government authorities.
“The safety and wellbeing of all occupants remain our highest priority,” Yekani said.
Municipal officials confirmed that all guests and staff at the resort are safe and were never in immediate danger. Resort management and onsite staff have continued assisting with the coordination of care for occupants while authorities monitor conditions closely.
However, the prolonged isolation has created logistical challenges. The resort is currently without electricity, and food supplies have reportedly been depleted after days of being cut off by floodwaters and hazardous road conditions.
The municipality said the immediate priority is to deliver food and essential supplies to the resort as soon as it can be done safely.
Access to the resort has been severely impacted by ongoing rainfall and flooding across the region. Direct road access remains unsafe due to washed-away sections of road and unstable conditions.
Authorities have now identified an alternative mountain route that may allow rescue and supply teams to reach the resort, depending on weather and safety assessments.
“The Joint Operations Centre, together with emergency services and provincial government, is coordinating all available resources,” Yekani said.
He explained that operational teams were deployed again earlier on Thursday to reassess the area, confirm road conditions, and determine whether safe movement or supply deliveries could proceed.
Officials said evacuation plans remain under consideration but will only move forward once conditions are deemed safe for both occupants and emergency responders.
The municipality has urged members of the public to avoid flooded and damaged roads and to comply with all safety instructions issued by authorities as severe weather continues to affect parts of the Greater Oudtshoorn region.
