With the country’s top 42km athlete, Irvette van Zyl, dropping out on the eve of the race with a foot injury, Lebo Phalula was the first South African across the line in 64th place (2:41:46) and Christine Kalmer settled for 96th spot (2:48:24).
The gruelling contest, held in warm conditions, was won by Jemima Sumgong of Kenya, who secured victory in 2:24:04.
Golfer Jaco van Zyl finished in a tie for 43rd at two over par and countryman Brandon Stone ended in a tie for 55th, a further seven shots behind.
The tournament was won by SA-born British player Justin Rose, who completed the fourth round at 16 under par.
Sailors Asenathi Jim and Roger Hudson took 18th and 11th positions in the sixth and seventh races of the men’s 470 class.
