GYMNASTICS NEWS - Two 12-year-old prodigies, Emma-Mae Lewis-Houghting and Joanique Kasselman, are set to dazzle as they prepare to represent South Africa at the FIG Trampoline Gymnastics World Age Group Championships.
The event takes place from 16 to 19 November at Birmingham's Utilita Arena.
Both homeschoolers are born and bred Georgians and train locally - Emma-Mae trains at Skat Gymnastics Club and Joanique at Live Gymnastics.
Joanique's journey began at age three, nurtured by coaches Lisa Gower and Riaan Swanepoel. With numerous regional and national medals in multiple disciplines, her dedication caught the attention of national trampoline coaches Lee Budler and Mandy Zoonekynd.
Emma-Mae embodies the same spirit. Since her journey started at age six, she has been displaying unwavering dedication. Guided by the same coaches, she is set to make her mark at the FIG Championships for the second time. Emma-Mae's 2022 performance in Bulgaria ranked her 13th worldwide in her age group.
"Both stories epitomise their passion and dedication," said Swanepoel. "As they take the global stage, their achievements inspire aspiring South African gymnasts."
The trip to Birmingham requires financial support. Each gymnast requires a minimum of R58 000 for participation and gear. "It would be incredible if we could rally behind Emma-Mae and Joanique, supporting their dreams," said Swanepoel.
