The tournament will coincide with what would have been Mandela’s 97th birthday, and the event would be staged in his memory as a former boxer himself. The tournament will be staged by Duma Boxing Promotions, which is headed by Duma Nogaga.
Nogaga said this would be the second successive year that he staged a tournament as part of the 67 Minutes for Madiba worldwide celebrations. “Madiba fought a good fight and this is a fitting tribute to him. I can guarantee you this is a first of its kind,” said Nogaga.
“Since 2010 I have been staging fights from my pocket and this is the first time that my bouts are paid by someone else. I also run a bursary scheme for deserving tertiary students so I appreciate this help,” he said.
