GARDEN ROUTE CRICKET NEWS - Village cricket teams from Knysna, George, Oudtshoorn, and Mossel Bay all came together for a day of great cricket last Sunday, 14 March.
The matches were part of a small villagers league that has been organised by the Knysna Villagers contingent for the four towns' villagers teams, in which each team will face the other three opponents on a round-robin basis.
There had already been one round of matches prior to this past week-end, which meant the games on Sunday were the second round. The third and final round of matches is set to be played on Sunday 11 April.
The matches are all held in good spirits, and serve as a means for over-40 cricketers to get back out on the field and have some fun. While the competitive edge is never lost in sports, villagers cricket is driven by a naturally friendly and social ethos.
Each game is played in good spirits and chirping is always more of a laugh than anything else.

On Sunday the Knysna Villagers took on the Oudtshoorn contingent on Abbottsfield A at the Sport at Backward Point facilities outside Rheenendal, while George and Mossel Bay went head-to-head on the PG Bison A field. On Abbottsfield, Oudtshoorn strode out to the middle to bat first, managing to rack up a score of 218-3 in their rain-affected innings that was reduced by two overs to 28 overs.
In the Knysna innings to follow, the men from Oudtshoorn put in a good shift with the ball, managing to restrict the home side to 119-6 in their 28 overs, giving Oudtshoorn a 99-run victory.
Meanwhile, across the road, Mossel Bay batted first and put a total of 212 on the board before they gave George all they had with the ball, bowling the side out for 74 to earn a 134-run victory.
Knysna Villagers will also be sending an over 45s team off to a festival in Cape Town in two weeks' time, which will see them in action against village teams from all over the country.
